The Legal Metrology department has carried out a series of sudden raids in the markets of Mangaldai, the headquarters of Assam’s Darrang district.
The Legal Metrology department, which looks after the protection of rights of the consumers in the day-to-day markets, carried out the raids to check the illegal practice of using unverified weighing and measuring instruments by a section of unscrupulous traders and vendors.

The sudden raids were carried out in the fish market, chicken and meat market, shops selling hardware and electronic goods by a team of senior officials of the department including Rajkumar Sarma, deputy controller, Tezpur Zone, Manoj Kumar Das, assistant controller, Mangaldai and Nirmali Bora, inspector, Mangaldai.
The sudden raids were started on Thursday by the team of officials.

A total of 7 cases have been registered under different provisions of the Legal Meteorology Act, 2009 and Package Commodities Rules 2011.
During the raids, several weighing and measuring instruments like electronic weighing machine, CI weights and beam scale were seized while imported electronic goods in packets without proper printed address have also been seized.

Meanwhile, talking to Northeast Now on Sunday, Manoj Kumar Das, assistant controller, Legal Metrology department, Mangaldai said, “The traders and vendors against whom cases have been registered are liable to face fine each to the tune of Rs 25,000 starting from a minimum of Rs 5,000.”
He reiterated that such sudden raids would be carried out in the markets across the district in the near future.
