In a major breakthrough, police have seized over 8 Kg of smuggled gold from a four-wheeler on NH 36 near Dillai Tiniali in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.
The consignment was recovered on Saturday from a Hyundai Venue car bearing registration number AS 01EV 2350 heading towards Guwahati from Manipur.
As per reports, the Dillai police intercepted the SUV for a routine check and on verifying the documents, a home guard identified as Maising Tokbi who was checking the vehicle raised doubt over the conduct of the driver.
On cross-checking the car, the home guard recovered 4 packets wrapped in black tarpaulin containing 49 gold bars having a value of Rs 4 Crore in the market.
Home Guard Maising Tokbi was offered a bribe by the smugglers which he refused to accept and he immediately reported the matter to his senior officer.
Tokbi played a key role in the recovery of the gold bars.
The gold bars were concealed near the engine of the vehicle and it was impossible to detect without proper checking.
Police have arrested two people identified as Prakash Basnet (32) and Subhash Bista (24) in connection with the recovery. Both are residents of Manipur.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the seized Gold bars were carried from Manipur and was supposed to be delivered at Guwahati.
The gold bars were seized and sealed in presence of an independent witness under the physical supervision of John Das, SDPO Bokajan.
