Police arrested a person in the Harmutty area in Assam’s Lakhimpur district for molesting a minor girl.

The incident took place at Kathoni village under Harmutty police outpost on Tuesday afternoon when an 8-year-old girl child was taken by one Purna Dsa (35) while she was returning from school.

Das tried the minor girl and tried to molest her when villagers came to help her on hearing her screams.

According to villagers, the man tried to undress her and also bit her cheek.

The man was later arrested by police under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and sent to Laluk police station.

A total of 1,28,531 crimes against children were recorded in India in 2020, implying that an average of 350 such cases were reported each day during the Covid19 pandemic, according to an NGO’s analysis of the NCRB data.
