Internet and SMS services has been shut down in Mon district of Nagaland by the state government.
The internet services and SMS services in Mon district of Nagaland has been suspended “in an attempt to control law and order”.

“…in order to prevent the misuse of the above-mentioned media from whipping up tension in the district, and further in order to prevent breach of the public peace and tranquility, and for maintaining law and order; I, Abhijit Sinha, Home Commissioner, Nagaland, hereby promulgate this notification under Section 5 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 to prohibit the Mobile Internet/ Data Service/Bulk SMS of all the Service Providers in the entire area of the Mon District with immediate effect till further orders,” a notification read.

“…there is apprehension of grave law and order problems in Mon District, Nagaland owing to the prevailing situation created by firing incidents,” the notification added.
“Short Message Service (SMS), Whatsapp, Facebook, and other social media platforms could be used for spreading of rumors, fake news, and for circulating inflammatory texts, pictures, videos etc. which may inflame passions and thus exacerbate the law-and-order situation,” it added.
At least 15 people lost their lives in a firing incident at Mon district in Nagaland on Saturday evening.
The incident took place somewhere at Oting village in Mon district of Nagaland.

The incident allegedly took place when a group of labourers onboard a pick-up vehicle was on its way from Tiru village.
Notably, many are accusing security forces deployed in the area of opening fire upon the civilians.
The 3 corps of the Indian Army, headquartered at Dimapur in Nagaland, has issued a statement saying that it ‘regrets’ the “unfortunate loss of lives” at Oting village in the state’s Mon district on Saturday evening.
Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio has announced a special investigation team (SIT) probe into the killing of innocent civilians at Oting village in Mon district of the state.

While appealing for peace, the Nagaland chief minister said that a high-level SIT will investigate the killings and deliver justice.
“High level SIT will investigate and justice delivered as per the law of the land. Appeal for peace from all sections,” Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio said.
