In view of acute shortage of blood in the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) here, a Blood Donation Camp was organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit in collaboration with the Students’ Society and JMC Blood Bank at Assam Agricultural University, here on Wednesday.
V Nimbalkar, Superintendant of Police, Jorhat and Md Imdad Ali, Additional SP, Jorhat were present as distinguished guests in the inaugural session of the camp.
Nimbalkar stated that it was a noble act to donate one’s blood and encouraged all present to help those who were in need of blood transfusions.
Ali said that donating ones blood to help a patient in need of a transfusion was a life-saving act.
DK Bora, DSW-cum-NSS Programme Coordinator, Assam Agricultural University (AAU) delivered the welcome address.
DK Borah, Dean, College of Agriculture, AAU, exhorted all students to keep up the rich tradition of AAU in donating blood as social service.
Shemim Rahman, Medical Officer-in-Charge, JMC Blood Bank, who highlighted the acute shortage of blood in the JMC Blood Bank, spoke on the importance of voluntary donation of blood.
Dimple Sarma, State Coordinator of an NGO, named Friends2support.org, an international network of blood donors, briefed the audience on their work of linking up needy patients with donors in a limited time-frame by introducing their Android App through their website.
Both Rahman and Sarma appealed to the students to continue to voluntarily donate blood and promptly reach out to the needy and save lives in various unforeseen situations.
In the camp, about 20 students from all the colleges in AAU, Jorhat campus voluntarily donated blood which was collected by the Blood Bank of Jorhat Medical College & Hospital.
S Borua, programme officer of NSS unit, AAU, offered the vote of thanks particularly to the student donors, most of whom were girls.
Sarat Sekhar Bora, General Secretary of the Students’ Society of AAU, Jorhat coordinated along with concerned secretaries Pritisha Patgiri and Rituraj Hazarika.
