Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association (ATTSA) and Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), on Tuesday, staged a protest in front of the office of Dibrugarh deputy commissioner against the management of Madarkhat Tea Estate here over non-payment of wages to workers. 

The members of tea bodies, holding play cards and banners, staged protest in front of Dibrugarh DC’s office demanding release of wages.  

Notably, for last two months, the workers of the tea garden allegedly have not received their wages and are facing tough time to run their families.

1144 permanent workers and 41 employees are associated with the tea garden.

Lakhindra Kurmi, general secretary of ATTSA – Dibrugarh said, “For past two months the employees and workers of the Madarkhat tea estate have not received their wages and ration. Despite several pleas, the Dibrugarh district administration failed to address the issue.”

ACMS, Dibrugarh, branch secretary Nabin Keot said, “For several months the workers of the tea garden are deprived of medical facilities, ration and wages. They are also deprived of PF, bonus and gratuity. Within 15 days, the problem should be sorted out and if district administration fails to solve the matter, then a massive agitation will be launched in association with 60 tea gardens.” 

A joint memorandum was submitted to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the issue.
