AJYCP protest at Gogamukh.

The AJYCP on Wednesday took a strong exception to the police crackdown on the agitating people who protested against the NHPC dam at Assam’s Gogamukh.

A large number of people staged a protest against the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP) of the NHPC Limited at Gerukamukh in Assam’s Dhemaji district on Tuesday.

The general secretary of the central committee of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Palash Changmai in a press release on Wednesday expressed displeasure at the police action on the anti-dam protesters on Tuesday on the pretext of Covid SOP.

“It is very shameful for the same government which in one hand assembles thousands of people for meetings and observes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday for twenty days and turns bias towards peaceful protesters,” said Palash Changmai in the release.

The AJYCP declared its resolution to continue the anti-dam stir despite the government’s efforts to thwart it.

The students-youth organisation also announced their programme to spread the stir to 965 villages in the downstream areas of the Subansiri river in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Majuli districts and to hold public consultations.

The AJYCP leaders demanded a discussion on the LSHEP issue at the Assam Cabinet meeting scheduled to be held at Dhemaji in the coming days.

The AJYCP also organized demonstrations against the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project at North Lakhimpur along with the rest of the state.

On Tuesday, the AJYCP launched a massive protest in Gogamukh against the construction of the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project over river Subansiri at Gerukamukh by NHPC Limited along with other organizations.
