The activists of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Tuesday launched a massive protest in Gogamukh in North Assam’s Dhemaji district against the construction of the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydro Electrical Power project.

The members of the All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA) and the Unique Women Committee also joined the agitation in which hundreds of people took part.

AJYCP president Rana Pratap Baruah said, “We want our state and the country to lighten up with electricity, but don’t want electric lights at the cost of people”.

He also said that they were not agitating for the sake of it.

Leading the stir, the state general secretary of AJYCP Palash Changmai said that a total ‘bandh’ was being called to stop the transportation of goods to the LSHEP site at Gerukamukh from the state highway at Gogamukh.

Addressing the public, the AJYCP general secretary said that the construction had been going on for the dam project despite the overflow of river water recently through the structure.

Changmai also said that the last tripartite talk between the NHPC, state government and various anti-dam protester organizations of December, 11, 2014 had a consensus of forming an expert committee to study the environmental impact of the dam.

But the report of the expert committee had not been made public so far, complained the AJYCP leader.

He demanded another tripartite talk involving all the anti-dam parties to implement the resolutions adopted at the meeting in 2014.
