Three Inland Water Transport department officials have been suspended in connection with the boat capsize in the river Brahmaputra at Nimatighat in upper Assam’s Jorhat district on Wednesday.

Sources said Assam Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has ordered the suspension of three IWTD officials following the tragic boat mishap.

The suspended officers are Executive Engineer Vikramaditya Choudhury, Assistant Executive Engineer (in charge) Mukut Gogoi and Junior Engineer Ratul Tamuly.

Personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and SDRF started search operations to rescue the missing boat passengers.

At least one person died and several passengers went missing after the boat capsized near Nimati Ghat following a head-on collision with a ferry on Wednesday.

A woman, identified as Parimita Das, died in a hospital after she was rescued from the river.

28-year-old Parimita, who hailed from Guwahati, taught in a college in Majuli.
