Nagaland Governor RN Ravi on Monday released a special cover on the “Naga Tree Tomato”, a Geographical Indication (GI) tagged product of the state, at Dr. Imkongliba Ao Hall in Raj Bhavan at Kohima.

Special covers are released by the Department of Posts to signify a significant event or highlight important products. The department has released covers on 19 GI products of the North East. Two special covers on “Naga Mircha” and “Chakhesang Shawl” were released last month.

Ravi thanked the department for its interest and initiatives and added that the GI tagging not only helps in the recognition of the product but brings enormous benefits in terms of economic gains to the producers.

He said the Northeast is enormously rich in diversity of natural and man-made products.

Stating that crafts of Nagaland catch the eyes of the people all around the world, Ravi said, “unfortunately there is very limited visibility of such products.” He urged the State Government to identify the unique and special products of the State and push for their GI tagging.

Chief Postmaster General, North East Circle, Amitabh Kharkwal said the GI tag is important as it prevents unauthorized use of registered GI products. He added that the special cover will be put on display at the National Philatelic Museum in New Delhi.
