Several parts of Manipur have seen an unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases over the last few weeks.
Covid-19 cases in Manipur’s Chandel district went up from a meager eight on June 28 to 34 on July 25 in four weeks.
The cases, though low in number, still reflect an unprecedented growth rate in terms of infection that has set alarm bells ringing.
As per last week’s data, the northeastern states of Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Assam accounted for 13 of the 22 districts of concern owing to the sharp surge in Covid cases, a source in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) pointed out.
The health minister had on Tuesday said that 44 districts across 12 states and UTs, including, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, are reporting more than 10 per cent weekly positivity in the week ending August 2.
Meanwhile, 18 districts across six states — Kerala (10 districts), Maharashtra (3), Manipur (2), Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Mizoram (1 each) — are reporting an increasing trend in daily new cases during the last four weeks, the health ministry had said.
