Three tribal youths– Rupa Brahma, Dinkar Musahary and Bhadreswar Basumatari—murdered All Bodoland Minority Student Union (ABMSU) leader Lafikul Islam in Kokrajhar, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said on Monday.
According to the CBI, the assailants of the minority students’ body leader are currently absconding.
The CBI has released images of the three assailants and announced a Rs 3 lakh reward for leads on the trio.
Lafikul Islam was shot dead in broad daylight by two bike-borne miscreants in western Assam’s Kokrajhar on August 1, 2016.
One year later, the Centre handed over the investigation of Lafikul Islam murder case to CBI in August 2017.
CBI registered a case under section 302 (Murder), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon) read with 34 (criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code and 25 (1), 27(3) of Arms Act.
Earlier Assam government had constituted a Special Investigative Team (SIT) headed to inquire into the brutal murder of Islam and provided ex-gratia relief of Rs. 5 lakh to the next of kin of the slain ABMSU leader.
This incident triggered state-wide protest.
