Assam government will set up five new medical colleges in five districts of the state entailing an expenditure of Rs 80 crore.

Assam finance minister Ajanta Neog said this in her budget speech in the Assembly.

These five new medical colleges will be set up at Golaghat, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Bongaigaon and Tamulpur, Neog said.

The government has also proposed to set up a State University in Karbi Anglong district.

There is a possibility to upgrade the present Diphu Government College into the State University.

The government allocated Rs 8 crore (2021-22), Rs 22 crore (2022-23) and Rs 20 crore (2023-24) to each of six universities to be set up under Tejasvi Navadhitamastu Edu-Infra Funds (TNEIF).

The universities are–Majuli University of Culture, Rabindranath Tagore University (Hojai), Bhattadev University (Pathsala), Madhabdev University (Narayanpur), Birangana Sati Sadhini State University (Golaghat) and Aniruddhadev Sports University (Chabua).

The government also proposed to offer financial package to reputed and over 100-year-old educational institutions.

It has also proposed to extend financial support to Sainik School, Goalpara.
