Police on Monday arrested a village panchayat official for allegedly accepting bribe from three youths in Assam’s Dibrugarh district.
Panchayat official Mridupaban Chetia of Panitola Gaon panchayat was caught red handed on Monday by police while taking a bribe of Rs 500 from three youths.
Police said he took the money promising to get Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC) issued.
He was caught by a team of Panitola police outpost bed by inspector-in-charge Dinanath Sonowal.
“We had received a formal complaint from the youths that the panchayat secretary had asked for a bribe of Rs 500 from them. Today, he was held while taking the bribe,” said Sonowal.
Sonowal said the panchayat secretary confessed that he has asked money from them for purchase office papers.
“These types of corrupt practice are still prevalent in many places of Assam. In many government offices, some officers take bribes,” said a source.
“We have detained the panchayat secretary of Panitola Gaon panchayat and are interrogating him. He confessed that he had accepted the bribe from them,” said a police officer.
