A 20-year-old woman, who tested positive for Covid19 on Wednesday, gave birth to a baby girl inside an ambulance on the way to Jorhat Medical College Hospital here.

According to sources, the woman came to her parents’ house at Cintamonigarh village in Bhogamukh, about 23 km away from Jorhat town when she developed labour pains.

On being taken to Bhogamukh Primary Health Centre (PHC) and subsequently tested for Covid19 there, she was found to be positive.

She was immediately sent in an ambulance to Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH) from the PHC.

But her condition worsened in the ambulance.

The ambulance team immediately parked the vehicle on the roadside and conducted the delivery, thus saving both the mother and the child.

Superintendent of JMCH, Dr Purnima Baruah while lauding the ambulance health care team said, “The woman should have been assessed before being sent here.”

“The woman has been admitted to the Covid ward in the hospital and the infant has been kept separately in another ward,” she said.

“The Covid19 test on the baby is most likely negative,” she said.
