Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kr Dass, who took oath as minister in the new cabinet on Monday, is likely to continue as chief of the ruling saffron party for at least six more months.
Dass, who is likely to get the education portfolio in the chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma-led new cabinet, has said that he will stay as state BJP president at least for the next six months.
Dass said that though BJP follows one man one post rule, he can continue to be the party president for 6 months and this is as per the party rules.
“I will continue to be the Assam BJP president for the next six months. There is not going to be any changes to the party president position immediately,” Dass told reporters in Guwahati on Tuesday.
Party sources, however, said that a final decision on whether the BJP will elect a new president right away or after six months will be taken by the party central leadership.
Soon after president Dass taking an oath as minister in the new cabinet, there was speculation about his successor.
Names of some senior BJP leaders including party general secretary Dilip Saikia, former MP Ramen Deka, and party MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and central minister Rameswar Telly are doing the round.
