The organizational secretary of the central committee of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and former Chief Executive Member of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), Debojit Thousen has appealed to Assam Government for holding of council election within stipulated time.

Though the Election Department is ready for the council polls, the state Home Department had said that if the council elections are held simultaneously with the panchayat elections, there will be shortage of security personnel.
As a result, the council elections have been postponed in the meeting.
Talking exclusively to Northeast Now on Tuesday, Thousen said that as the tenure of the present council will expire on June 2 next, it is mandatory as per law to hold the elections before that.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making all efforts to extend the tenure of the present council. Thousen further said that the AGP is not going to accept the tactics employed by the saffron party. He further warned of legal action in this regard.
Thousen further said that as the BJP has lost its ground in Dima Hasao district, they are keen on delaying the elections.
Thousen also exuded confidence that the AGP will form the council winning in majority.
Though AGP is in alliance with the BJP at the state government, it is in opposition with the saffron party in NCHAC.
He also said that the AGP will fight the council elections alone.
He further alleged that the BJP led government in the State has almost finalized to postpone the council elections in the pretext of the ensuing panchayat elections and the publication of the second draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Thousen said the reason of NRC draft is absurd, while the delay of six months in view of the panchayat elections is unacceptable.
