The United Students’ Union of Karbi Anglong (USUKA) slammed the BJP-led Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) for its failure to carry out eviction of doubtful settlers at Langkaijan inside Karbi Anglong district.
In a press release, the USUKA said an eviction drive was supposed to be carried out on March 9, 2018 as announced by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang at a press conference but it failed to do so.The release said that the BJP-led government did not carry out the eviction drive as a ‘vote bank politics’ keeping in view the forthcoming Panchayat election. “By doing so, the BJP has betrayed the indigenous people. Such inaction should not be repeated and CEM Ronghang should go ahead with the eviction drive at Langkaijan at the earliest for the sake of indigenous people of Karbi Anglong,” the USUKA stated.

It may be recalled that a press conference was held on the evening of March 7 by the KAAC CEM in which along with the plan to carry out the eviction drive in Langkaijan area in Karbi Anglong, he said, all construction works would be completed under KAAC within the month of March.

The borders of Karbi Anglong district are reserved forest areas, both at the inter-state border with Nagaland and the inter-district border with Hojai.

The reserve forests are easy targets for encroachers with large track of forest land being cleared for cultivation and settlement. Various social organisations have from time to time toured the border areas of Karbi Anglong district and highlighted the problem repeatedly but till now no concrete action has been formulated.

Recently, on March 12, Forest officials of Karbi Anglong nabbed three suspected encroachers from the inter-State border of Assam and Nagaland, who were clearing a forested area with an excavator inside Daldali Reserve Forest in Karbi Anglong district.
