Former All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) general secretary and a signatory of the BTR Accord, Lawrence Islary has joined the United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL).

The ex-ABSU general secretary joined the UPPL, led by BTR chief executive member (CEM) Pramod Boro along with several ex-ABSU leaders and workers in a joining ceremony at Khangklabada in Kokrajhar district.

Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) chief executive member and UPPL president Pramod Boro welcomed Islary and others with traditional aronai and Assamese gamosa.

Former MLA Parmeswar Brahma, ex-BTC executive member Rabindra Bala Biswas were among the prominent faces, who joined the UPPL on Thursday.

Around 2,000 members from various parties and organisations including the Bodoland People’s Party (BPF), Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) and ABSU also formally joined the UPPL.

Regarding the alliance with the BJP in the ensuing Assam Assembly elections, Pramod Boro said, “Talks are on between the two parties for the alliance.”

When asked if Lawrence Islary would be given ticket to fight the Assembly elections, Pramod Boro said, “Islary has joined our party and he will be given a suitable post in the party. But the party will decide on the ticket later.”

Speaking to reporters, Islwary said he has joined the UPPL to work for the all-round development of the Bodoland Territorial Region.
