Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) Mayor, Tame Phassang launched the Nahar oil-based SHL Nahar Soap developed by the mechanical department of North East Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA).

Phassang commended the team of students from the university for coming up with innovative idea and developing cost-effective commonly used items.

“We mostly use Nahar for decoration purposes, but a team of professors and scientists from NERIST has proved anything and everything is useful in this world with technology,” he said at a function held on Friday in the NERIST campus at Nirjuli near Itanagar.

Phassang said such innovation with locally-available resources is the true step toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call of ‘Vocal for Local’.

“I urge the local denizens to come forward and use such products to encourage and support local entrepreneurs. IMC will extend all possible support to the team for more such innovations and technologies,” he added.

Arunachal Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Tarh Nachung, while appreciating the students, assured his support in marketing if the team produces the soap on a commercial scale. He urged other departments to come up with innovations.

UBA regional coordinator, Pradip Lingfa said that the Nahar oil-based soap has been developed under UBA and sponsored by the Ministry of Education.

“Besides soap, we can also develop biodiesel from Nahar oil and other products,” Lingfa said, adding that at least five villages have been adopted under UBA for helping their inhabitants with research and technology.

Earlier, Professor (ME) Sandeep Singh elaborated on all the procedures and components of the soap developed by the team.
