The 15th Finance Commission has recommended a new embankment-cum-road for Assam’s river island Majuli.
The commission has also recommended a project for the comprehensive development of the shakti shrine Kamakhya temple in Guwahati.
While the finance panel has recommended Rs 1,075 crore for the construction of the new embankment-cum-road in Majuli, Rs 300 crore earmarked for the overhaul of the Kamakhya temple complex nestled atop picturesque Nilachal Hills.
The 15th Finance Commission, headed by N K Singh, submitted its report to Parliament on Monday.
The embankment-cum-road, once constructed, is expected to solve the perennial problem of erosion of Majuli and provide comfort for road travel around the island.
According to the 2011 census, the total population of Majuli is 1.67 lakh who live in 248 villages.
