The political parties in Assam have requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold the Assembly polls in the state in 3 phases.
Most of the political parties have urged the Election Commission to conduct the Assembly polls before the Rongali Bihu festival in April.
The full bench of the EC, led by the Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora, has been in Assam on a three-day visit since January 18, 2019 with a view to review the preparedness for the ensuing Assam Assembly polls 2021.
A media report quoted BJP leader Jayanta Malla Barua as saying that the saffron party has urged the Election Commission to hold the Assembly elections in the state in 3 phases before Rongali Bihu.
The other political parties including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the CPI(M) also urged the EC to conduct the Assembly polls in Assam before Rongali Bihu in two or more phases.
They opined that if the election is conducted before the Bihu, the people of the state would be able to freely celebrate the festival.
However, the Congress requested the Election Commission to hold the elections after the Bihu festival, the report quoted party’s state legal cell chairman Niren Borah as saying.
Besides, the AIUDF urged the Election Commission to resolve the long-standing issue of D-voters permanently, the report quoted party’s general secretary Aminul Islam as saying.
