Officials of the forest department on Wednesday busted an illegal timber trade in the Dalgaon area of Darrang district.

The officials seized two illegal sawmills and recovered a large number of timber logs in two separate operations in the area.

Officials of the Mangaldai forest beat office in collaboration with officials of Rangiya forest beat office and Darrang police conducted the operation.

Debabrata Sarma beat officer of Mangaldai forest beat office said, “Upon receiving information about illegal sawmills, the divisional forest officer of NK Division directed us to carry out operations against them in the Dalgaon area.”

“We carried out separate operations in Pub Batabari and No 5 Baruajhar village with assistance from the Darrang police and staff of Rangiya forest beat office,” he said.

The forest officials seized timber logs worth Rs 1.5 lakh during the operation.

However, no one has been arrested so far.

The sawmill in Botabari was allegedly run by Soleman Ali while the one in Baruajhar was run by Janak Teli.

Both are absconding.
