The Lakhimpur district unit of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Saturday staged a massive demonstration in Assam’s North Lakhimpur against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Calling their agitation “Gana Hunkar”, members of Lakhimpur AASU paid tributes to the five martyrs, who were killed during the anti-CAA protests in 2019.

The students’ organization demanded that the Union government scrap the act and appealed to the public to restart the anti-CAA movement in the state.

They also asked the state and central government to honour the esteem of the people of Assam.

Moreover, the AASU leadership on Swahid Divas (Martyrs’ Day) had said that they will continue to fight against CAA both in court and on the streets.

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) also staged a demonstration against CAA in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in North Lakhimpur today.

Termed as Jatiya Garjjan (national outrage, the KMSS also called for the repeal of CAA as Assam could no longer carry the additional burden of foreign nationals.

Similar protests against CAA have also been reported from other parts of the district.
