Minority student groups in Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) have decided to launch a joint movement against the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) alleging that the BTC has made a covert design to curtail the land rights of non-tribals, who are living in the Council area.
The All Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) and the All BTC Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) on Monday had a joint meeting in Bongaigaon town to set their agitational programme demanding land rights for the non-tribals in the BTAD.

“The political parties had triggered conflicts and clashes among the communities living in the Council area in the past only to gain political mileage, so under no political influence the student groups have decided to continue the agitation for the land rights of the non-tribals residing in the council area,” said AAMSU President Azizur Rahman.
Rahman also sought protection of land rights for the non-tribals in the Council area from the Union and State government even by reviewing the BTC Accord if necessary.
ABMSU President Shahkamal Khandakar has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to implement their promises of ‘right to equality’ and ‘equal development’, for the non-tribals in the BTC region.

“We will not allow the political parties to spark tension among the communities living in BTC region by creating mutual mistrust using the Council as their paternal asset,” warned AAMSU General Secretary Rezaul Karim Sarkar.
Azuzur Rahman slammed Kokrajhar MP Naba Kumar Sarania for his failure to place the views of non-tribals, residing in BTC area, in and outside the Parliament and keep the aspirations of his voters.
The student groups would stage demonstration in front of the BTC Secretariat in Kokrajhar demanding land rights for the non-tribals in BTC region on March 19 before submitting a memorandum to BTC Chief Hagrama Mahilary, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the same day, Rahman added.
