The police have exhumed the body of a 35-year-old woman from Didarkhush in Sonai block in Assam’s Cachar district.
The victim has been identified as Ranjana Begum, who was allegedly killed by her husband, Jamal Uddin in an inebriated form on the night of November 6, said police sources.
Didarkhush is situated about 28km from the district headquarter of Silchar.
According to police sources, the incident occurred when the couple got into a heated argument after Jamal reached home in an inebriated state at night on November 6.
He then strangled Ranjana and burnt her body.
He reportedly buried her later near an under-construction building, about 2.5 kilometers from their house.
On Saturday, Jamal reportedly told people in his village that his wife had gone missing.
However, on knowing about the incident members of the village defence party grew suspicious, and beat up Jamal, following which he confessed to his crime.
They later handed him over to the police.
The incident has sparked tension in Didarkhush and its neighbouring areas.
On Tuesday afternoon, a team of police personnel of the Sonai Police Station along with district administration officials reached Didarkhush and exhumed the body of the victim.
The body has been sent to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Silchar for an autopsy and the report is awaited.
“We are questioning the accused to find out more details about the incident. All possible angles related to the murder are being thoroughly investigated,” a police official said.
