The Tripura police have arrested one National Liberation Force of Tripura (NLFT) associate from Amarpur in Gomati district.
The accused, along with another, was involved in serving extortion notices of the banned militant outfit to several people in Gomati and South Tripura districts. They had demanded that the extortion money be paid to them before Diwali this year.
With the Autonomous District Council elections fast approaching, extremist activities are on the rise in the state.
NLFT extremists, reportedly operating from Bangladesh, are serving extortion notices to people in the state through their associates.
The NLFT has been demanding extortion from people particularly in the hilly areas of the state. The outfit is mainly targeting the Chowdhurys (village chiefs) in Dalak, Jamatia Colony and Chelagang Mukh areas of Amarpur, said police sources.
Amarpur sub-divisional police officer, Ramesh Yadav said, “A case has been lodged in the Birganj Police Station on November 1 in connection with the distribution of extortion notices by two NLFT associates. One of them has been arrested.”
“On the basis of information gathered while interrogating this associate who was arrested on Wednesday, we will trace and pick up his accomplice. We are hopeful of gathering more information on NLFT activities from them,” Yadav said.
