The decision on the future of the  Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), the newly launched political party of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) will be decided at its 17th general conference.

The conference is scheduled to take place in Duliajan from November 18 to 21.

A change in the AASU leadership is likely to take place and some of the leaders may also join active politics in the near future, reports stated.

Currently, veteran students’ leader Samujjal Bhattacharya is the chief adviser of the students’ union, while Dipankar Nath and Lurinjyoti Gogoi are its president and general secretary respectively.

Sources in AASU said that there is no definite information available whether the present leaders of the union will join politics post a change in the top leadership during the general conference.

However, Bhattacharya had said that he would tender his resignation from the post of chief adviser in November this year.

Many top union members are also aspiring to join politics and are eagerly waiting for the general conference where issues regarding the future of AJP will become clear.
