At least 14 shops were gutted in a major fire erupted at Pandu Market under Jalukbari police station in Guwahati on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
While goods worth Rs several crore were destroyed, no casualty was reported.
Fire brigades from various city fire stations struggled for more than one hour before it was doused completely on Sunday morning.
Police said of the 14 shops, nine were completely destroyed in the blaze.
Piyush Deb, a whole seller, who runs Deb Paan Store, said they suffered a major loss
“It’s a huge loss. I just stored goods for Sunday market and for my retailers. We suffered a loss of nearly 30 lakh,” Deb said.
Police suspect the cause of the fire would be due to short circuit.
