Cattle-lifters now make use of luxury cars to transport cows in order to avoid police checking.
This came to light after Tangla Police in the Udalguri district recovered a Toyota Innova vehicle at Tangla and rescued a cattle head that was being transported on the vehicle.
According to reports, a team of Tangla Police acted after receiving information that a vehicle was parked near an oil depot and a group of four persons was suspiciously loitering around the area on Saturday night at about 11 pm.
“We suspect that they were cow-lifters as the cow was tied and was pushed into the car as the second and third-row seats were removed,” said the officer-in-charge of Tangla police station, Someswar Konwar.
“A police team rushed to the spot after receiving the information but the cow-lifters (three to four in number) fled from the spot,” Konwar said.
Tangla Police have also recovered an iron wire cutter from the vehicle and have impounded the Toyota Innova vehicle bearing registration number AS23U5411 and are looking after the rescued cow.
“We are working on a couple of clues and are confident of tracking them down,” he added.
