A team of officials from the Pasighat forest division on Monday rescued a male elephant calf, which separated from its herd, from the Remi wet rice cultivation (WRC) field of Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district.
After receiving information on the baby elephant from the locals, Pasighat divisional forest officer (territorial), Tashi Mize and his officials immediately rushed to the WRC field and rescued the mammal with the help of the Yagrung and Remi villagers.
Mize said the elephant must have swept away from his parents due to the heavy water current of Remi stream.
He further asked the villagers to alert the forest officials if they hear or come across any elephant herds so that a possible reunion of the baby elephant with its herd could be initiated.
“The calf is under our custody for now and we are feeding him 50 gms of NAN powder and 1.5 liters of lukewarm water per feeding as prescribed by our senior veterinarian. We are feeding him nine times in a span of 24 hours”, Mize said.
