MHA seeks 3 months’ extensions to make rules to implement Citizenship Amendment Act

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought three months’ extension to make rules for implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The plea was made before the Department Related Standing Committee for Subordinate Legislation as according to the parliamentary procedure, the rules for any legislation should be framed within six months of the presidential assent or an extension must be sought.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) was passed by the Parliament on December 11 and accordingly, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to make it an Act.

However, the six months’ timeline for the government passed in June that compelled the Union Home Ministry to ask for three months’ extension.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) aims to give citizenship status to six minority communities, who fled from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, due to religious prosecution.

On August 4, the Department Related Standing Committee for Subordinate Legislation is likely to make a call on the Union Home Ministry’s appeal.
