A man from Lakhimpur’s Bangalmara area was arrested by the police after he hacked several persons including his wife, daughter, and parents.

He also tried to attack neighbours and policemen who tried to stop him.

The incident took place in Gohain Pukhuri village under Bangalmara Police Outpost in Lakhimpur district.

The attacker has been identified as one Noor Jamal alias Jamal Uddin and the incident took place on Friday afternoon.

His wife Sajida Begum and step-mother Mumtaz Begum died in that attack while his father Abdul Halim (55) and nephew Taslima Begum (7) were severely injured in the attack.

Later, the accused locked himself inside a house in the village when the police arrived.

According to police, Noor Jamal came outside when the police were breaking the door.

The Inspector-in-Charge of Bangalmara Police Outpost Arjun Singh was injured in the attack.

Police driver Basudev Gogoi was also attacked by Noor Jamal.

The police resorted to firing when the accused continued to attack them and one Ramjan Ali was injured in that process.

Later, police managed to arrest Noor Jamal with the help of villagers from a flooded paddy field after his failed attempt to commit suicide by silting his throat.

“We arrived on the spot in response to a distress call and found the accused had locked himself inside the house. He stormed out while we’re breaking the door and attacked us with a long dao,” said injured IC Arjun Singh.

Reacting to the incident the sister-in-law of the accused said Noor Jamal had attacked his wife while she was going for a bath.

“His step-mother received the blow when he tried to hack his son,” she said.
