TikTok

After India, Chinese short video-sharing app TikTok may be banned in the US.

In an interview with Fox News late on Monday, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States is โ€œcertainly looking atโ€ banning Chinese social media apps, including TikTok.

India last week banned 59 Chinese apps including popular app TikTok, citing security reasons amidst border tensions between India and China.

โ€œWith respect to Chinese apps on peopleโ€™s cell phones, I can assure you the US will get this one right tooโ€ฆ I donโ€™t want to get out in front of the President (Donald Trump), but itโ€™s something weโ€™re looking at,โ€ Pompeo said in the interview.

When asked โ€œwould you recommend downloading TikTok?โ€ Pompeo said, โ€œif you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.โ€

Pompeoโ€™s remarks come amid increasing US-China tensions over the handling of COVID19 outbreak, Chinaโ€™s actions in Hong Kong and a nearly two-year trade war.

TikTok, a short-form video app, is owned by China-based ByteDance.

The US lawmakers have raised national security concerns over TikTokโ€™s handling of user data.

โ€œGood to see India ban 59 popular apps owned by Chinese firm,โ€ tweeted Nikki Haley, the former US ambassador to the United Nations.
