Two more persons died due to COVID-19 in Assam, taking the death toll in the state to 11.

While a 72-year-old man from Jyotikuchi area in Guwahati reportedly passed away on Friday, another person from the city’s Pandu area succumbed to the disease on Monday at Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

The septuagenarian from Jyotikuchi area has been identified as Bhabesh Kangsha Banik, and the man from Pandu area, who breathed his last on Sunday, is Lakhi Das.

The Kamrup (Metro) district on Sunday recorded the highest single day spike of COVID-19 positive cases with 73 people being infected with the virus in the last 24 hours.

The tally of those infected by the virus in Kamrup (Metro) till date has crossed the 400-mark.

With the spurt in new infections, at least five new hotspots in Guwahati have been identified, which include localities at Pandu, Fancy Bazar and Sarabbhatti.

Several new areas of the city have also been declared containment zones.

Assam on Sunday reported 331 fresh positive cases, taking the total number of cases in the state to 5,586.

The state currently has 2,170 active patients. A total of 3,404 people have recovered and three others have migrated.
