The statue of Mahatma Gandhi outside the Indian embassy in the United States of America was vandalised by unknown miscreants.
Amid the growing unrest in the country after the death of an African-American person George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25, graffiti and spray paint was used to damage the statue.
Following the incident, the mission officials registered a complaint with the local law enforcement agencies and the incident is reported to have taken place on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday in Washington DC.
The local law enforcement agencies have swung into action after the complaint was registered and they are investigating the incident.
A team of Metropolitan Police officials on Wednesday, in consultation with the Diplomatic Security Service and National Park Police, carried out inquiries at the site of the incident.
The authorities are also working on a mission mode to clean up the site.
