At least 19 people were killed in landslides triggered by incessant rains in South Assam’s Barak Valley districts on Tuesday.
Seven people, including two children and a woman, were killed and two others seriously injured in a landslide that hit a tin house at Mohanpur area near Bolobabazar in Hailkandi district,
On the other hand, seven persons were killed in a landslide in Cachar district, six persons lost their lives in Karimganj district.
Project officer of district disaster management authority Cachar, Shamim Ahmed Laskar said that the incident took place in Joypur area of the district.
“All the deceased victims are from one family. We have sent SDRF and Assam Rifles will also join in the rescue operations,” Laskar said.
On the other hand, six persons from Karimpur in Kaliganj area of Karimganj district lost their lives due to massive landslide.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incidents of landslides triggered by incessant rain in the districts of Barak valley.
The chief minister directed the deputy commissioner (DC) s of three Barak valley districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi along with SDRF to speed up relief and rescue operations and extend all possible help to those affected by the landslides.
He also directed the district administration to immediately release ex-gratia to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the tragic incidents.
Moreover, chief minister Sonowal instructed the district administrations to take steps to provide necessary medical facilities to those injured in the incidents.
