The Somsai and Chassad Battalion of Ukhrul Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) in Manipur organized a tree plantation drive at Poi, Awangkasom, Chassad and remote villages of Kamjong district on Saturday.
“The tree plantation drive was conducted with an aim of contributing to the Green Drive of our country, fighting against global warming and thereby reducing its impact on climate change and ultimately presenting a better environment for the next generation,” stated PRO Assam Rifles (South) in a press release here.
A total of 1980 saplings of locally available flora which includes teak, pine, mulberry, guava, pine and banana among others were prepared by establishing a nursery in the units and the saplings thus grown were planted during the tree plantation drive, it said.
The units are encouraging the locals to do the same so that a large number of saplings can be locally prepared and planted for increasing the green cover of the area,it added.
Informing that all the attendees pledged to carry forward the initiative and contribute actively towards increasing the green cover in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts of Manipur which are still one of the most pristine natural habitats, the release added that the endeavour of the Assam Rifles is to contribute as much as possible in the ‘Go Green’ initiative of Government of India.
Assam Rifles will continue to organize such activities to contribute in maintaining ecological balance and conserving the environment, the release added.
