A criminal was shot dead during an encounter with Assam Police at Dongerpar village in Tistarpar area under Dhubri police station, said police.

The area is located near the Indo-Bangla border and is about 12 km from Dhubri town.

Dhubri superintendent of police Yuvraj said, “The encounter took place as a criminal and his accomplice opened fire on a police patrolling party.”

The incident took place in the wee hours on Monday.

“However, in retaliatory firing, a dreaded criminal, later identified as Sah Alom later, was injured and taken to Dhubri Civil Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Another criminal fled from the spot,” said Yuvraj.

Yuvraj said the police team was on their routine patrolling duty when they saw a group of 3-4 persons roaming on road in the locality.

“And when the patrolling party approached the group to ask about what they are doing in the wee hours in that area the group opened fire at the police,” said the SP while addressing a press conference in his officer chamber on Monday.

The deceased was a resident of Barkhola area near Chapar town of Dhubri district.

The Dhubri superintendent of police said Sah Alom was named in many cases related to loot and extortion in various police stations of Dhubri district.

One 7.65 mm factory-made pistol along with a magazine and four rounds of live bullets were also recovered from the spot.

Meanwhile, the locals said they had heard three rounds of firing at night and had no report regarding the group causing any harm to the people living in the locality.

“Further investigation into the matter is on and the police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the other members of the group,” said Yuvraj.

He also added that the entire scenario and motive of the criminals will be clear only after the arrest of the other members of the group.
