A child marriage bid has been foiled by the Dhubri Police.

Dhubri Police on Monday night arrested 13 people for their involvement in a child marriage.

All the 13 arrested, including the groom, were sent to the judicial custody on Tuesday after they were produced in the court.

On Monday night, the police received a phone call from a local who said a minor girl was getting married at the Alomganj Part 9 village under Gauripur police station of Dhubri district.

After receiving the information, a police team rushed to the spot.

While conducting a raid in the place, the police were able to rescue the girl, who is below 15 years.

The people who gathered in the marriage function were residents of Alomganj Part 9 village.

The police team arrested 13 persons, seven from the groom’s family and six from the bride’s family in connection with the case.

A case (no 494/2020) has been registered at Gauripur police station under Section 9 (punishment for male adult marrying a child), 10 (punishment for solemnizing a child marriage) of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and other sections of IPC against the arrested persons.

The arrested people have been identified as Sofiyal Mondal (bridegroom), Jomiruddin Mondal, Sahajahan Ali, Kudus Ali, Abdul Kader Sk, Sonowar Hussain, Hasem Ali, Asmot Ali, Md Abusama Mondal, Joynal Abedin Sarkar, Osman Ali and Sohid Ali.

The officer-in-charge of Gauripur police station said, “We received information about the incident of child marriage over the phone following which a police team rushed to the spot where the marriage was taking place on Monday night.”

A case has been registered with the Gauripur police station in this regard, the police officer said.

“We arrested 13 accused in this case and they were presented before the court. The court has sent all the accused to the judicial custody today,” the officer-in-charge said.
