The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday issued a high alert to all states, Union Territories, central agencies that drug smugglers could take the advantage of Covid-19 situation for trafficking drugs.
“Based on inputs received from INTERPOL, an alert relating to international drug trafficking activities taking advantage of this global pandemic scenario and of possible drug shipments concealed in cargo relating to Covid-19 protective equipments has been issued,” sources in the CBI said.
The sources said, “As there are imports and exports of Covid19 related items, the drug traffickers could possible take the advantage of the situation.”
The development assumes much significance for the Northeastern states, as this landlocked region is often considered as the transit route for trafficking of drugs in South Asian countries.
The proximity of Northeast along with few neighbouring countries including Bangladesh, Myanmar is a major reason of worry to the security agencies.
“Porus border of Northeast along with its neighbouring countries are also major cause of worry for the security agencies,” sources added.
