Amid nationwide lockdown, illegal transportation of cannabis, locally known as ganja, continues through Darrang district under the nose of the police and excise officials.

This could be evident when a consignment of banned cannabis was recovered from a private car after it met with a mishap on Sunday at Puniya near here.

Police seized nearly one hundred kilogram of cannabis from a Santro car bearing registration No. AS01-E-2286.

Police sources told Northeast Now on Sunday: “The car, which was on the way towards Guwahati from Mangaldai collided with a standing mini truck with registration No AS25-CC-2799 in the opposite direction at Puniya on the NH-15.”

“While searching the car, the police recovered a huge quantity of cannabis, the value of which in the smuggling market is estimated to be more than couple of lakhs,” sources said.

Surprisingly, during investigation it appeared before the police that the car was used with a duplicate number plate on the original number plate with an illegible registration number, sources further said.
