Sensation prevailed across Assam following reported detention of Assam’s Power Minister and BJP leader Pallab Lochan Das in Tripura on the last day of election campaigning in the poll-bound State.

Das was reportedly detained on charges of violating Election Code of Conduct.

According to media reports, the Assam minister Das was detained while he was busy in poll-related activities at Gandacherra area under 44 Raima Valley Assembly Constituency in Dhalai district of Tripura.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activists complained before the Election Commission against Assam’s Power Minister Das stating that Das was violating the Election Code of Conduct.

Immediately after receiving the complaint, Das was detained, media reports said.

Reports also stated that he was detained by the Gandacherra police.

Another media report, he was detained along with some big suitcases and a fake pass.

The locals gheraoed Das in Gandacherra so that he can’t move and from there he was detained by police, sources said.

Later police took minister Das to Agartala, the State capital of Tripura.

The detention of a minister from Assam has created reactions across the State.

When contacted, over the telephone, Das said, “I was not busy in election campaign at Gandacherra. When police told me about the Election Code of Conduct and asked me to leave the area by 4 pm as per law, I could not move out as the road towards Agartala is surrounded by thick jungles. Then the police escorted me to Agartala.”

The detention of a minister from Assam has created reactions across the State.

Meanwhile, Pradyot Kishore Manikya, heir of the royal family in Tripura and the working president of the Tripura Congress unit tweeted, “Reports coming that BJP Assam minister Pallabh (sic) Lochan Das apprehended in Gandacherra with suitcases and a fake pass. I am sure he was not there roaming as a tourist.”
