Meghalaya Police has warned people against spreading misinformation and rumours on the death of a youth after he jumped from the window of his ward at Shillong’s Bethany hospital into the stream flowing next to the hospital.

A statement issued by East Khasi Hills SP, Claudia Lyngwa said that there was nothing to relate the incident with the recent events regarding COVID-19.

The SP said people should refrain from spreading any misinformation /rumours regarding the same.

She informed that at around 9 am on Monday, the information was received at Laitumkhrah Police Station from the staff of Bethany Hospital that one of their in-patient, Tainingstar Jyrwa (26 years) of South West Khasi Hills district has committed suicide by jumping from the window of his ward into the stream flowing next to Bethany Hospital.

She said that immediate inquiry was conducted by the staff of Laitumkhrah Police Station and it was informed that Jyrwa was admitted to Bethany Hospital on March 30 as he was a drug addict and needed psychiatric care.

“There is nothing to relate his suicide with recent events regarding COVID-19 and the public should refrain from spreading any misinformation /rumours regarding the same,” the SP said.
