A man from Howrah district in West Bengal lost his life hours after police assaulted him for going out of home to buy milk during the lockdown.

The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Lal Swami, a resident of Howrah.

Media reports quoted family members of the victim as alleging that the man died of the injuries he had received when he was beaten up by police.

The man stepped out of his home, reportedly for buying milk, while the police baton-charged to clear a gathering on the street.

Seriously injured Lal Swami was immediately taken to the hospital but the doctors declared him brought dead.

While the family members of the victim have claimed that the man died due to police assaults, the cops denying the allegation said he died of heart ailments.

Police said the man was suffering from heart ailments.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared countrywide lockdown from March 24 midnight as a preventive measure to contain the spread of coronavirus.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday urged all the citizens to obey the norms of 21-day countrywide lockdown and maintain ‘social distancing’.

The number of coronavirus cases in West Bengal increased to 10 after a 66-year-old man in Nayabad tested positive for coronavirus infection.

The patient was reportedly admitted to the Peerless Hospital.

The police have been cracking down on people violating the lockdown norms.

The police have been allowed to take action against people who are violating curfew under Section 188 of the IPC but at the same time, they cannot take action on people who go out of the home to purchase essential commodities.
