The finals of the badminton competition of 3rd State Olympic Games were played at the Raj Bhawan Badminton Stadium in Itanagar on Sunday.
The men’s singles final saw Laa Robin representing Kamle win gold for his district after he defeated Pakli Bagra of Kurung Kumey 21-16, 18-21, 21-18 in a hard-fought match.
Nabam Isaac representing Papum Pare and Bikram Gurung of East Kameng won bronze in the category.
The women’s singles gold went to Napi Tayam from Kurung Kumey after she defeated her otherwise doubles partner Taku Neha in sets of 21-18, 12-21, 21-18.
Taring Yapi of Kra Daadi and East Kameng’s Jamba Waii won bronze in the category for their respective districts.
The men’s double finals saw Gumjo Lollen and Kalung Takhi of Rajiv Gandhi University get the better of Ambita Sonam and New Pordung from East Kameng as they defeated the latter in straight sets of 21-15 and 23-21 to win gold.
While Sonam and Pordung had to settle for silver, the bronze in the category went to Nehru Leriak and Tai Doyom of Upper Subansiri and Dolang Gungung and Nabam Taklo of Kra Daadi.
Kurung Kumey’s pair of Napi Tayam and Taku Neha defeated Irani Sonowal and Jambaa Waii from East Kameng to clinch gold in the women’s doubles category.
Napi and Taku won the match in straight sets of 21-16, 21-12.
Montilly Pul and Yasin Ngadong of from Anjaw and Upper Subansiri’s Yane Kamsar and Yapak Nasi had to settle for bronze.
Gold in the mixed doubles finals went Upper Subansiri’s Tai Doyom and Yane Kamse after they defeated the pair of Irani Sonowal and Bikram Gurung from East Kameng in sets of 21-16, 21-20 in the finals.
Though Irani and Bikram gave a tough fight in the second set they had to, however, settle for silver once again.
Kra Daadi’s Dolang Gunung and Taring Yapi and Papum Pare’s Praveen Kr Chetry and Choklom Niji walked home with bronze.
The finals of the competition were, among others, witnessed by former sports and youth affairs minister Mohesh Chai and Arunachal State Badminton Association secretary Bamang Tago who later also gave away the prizes to the winners.
The competition was held under tournament referee Tania Yasap who is a national level umpire.
