A bizarre incident in Tripura has left everyone baffled after a woman was refused entry by her husband and in-laws after she gave birth to a girl child two months back!
And since then, the lady and her two-month-old child have been living at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Agartala.
The incident came to light on Wednesday night when Surma constituency MLA Asish Das reported about it to ChildLine after he learned about it.
A ChildLine team immediately rushed to the hospital and on Thursday morning they took the mother and the child into their custody.
“The lady was in a bad shape and no one had come to visit her in the last two months,” a ChildLine worker said.
“The nurses gave her iron tablets and other medicines along with two meals a day,” the worker added.
The lady later lodged an FIR with the West Agartala Women Police Station against her husband and her in-laws.
“I was threatened by my husband that if I deliver a girl child, he will not take me home,” the lady said.
“Since I am an orphan and have no one except my in-laws, I had nowhere to go after their refusal,” she added.
The incident, the first of its kind ever reported in Tripura, has made a complete mockery of BJP’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana’.
It is surprising to see that in a BJP-ruled state, where there are huge hoardings and massive advertisement regarding the scheme, the implementation at the grassroots is so low.
“We have workshops, training programmes on Beti padhao, Beti Bachao almost every second month. A lot of money is spent on advertisements. But the implementation at the ground level is zero and this incident proves it,” said an Agartala resident.
“There might be many such cases, which are yet be reported,” she added.
“Tripura’s society wasn’t like this before. Something has seriously gone wrong. I hope appropriate action is taken against the husband,” she added.
