A meeting of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) will be held on Thursday to discuss the Rajya Sabha election and the upcoming budget session.
Sources said the meeting will be held at Hotel Pinewood in Shillong on Thursday evening.
“The meeting will discuss some agendas including the candidate of the ruling MDA for the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat, the upcoming budget session, and other issues,” said sources.
The National People’s Party (NPP) which is leading the MDA government will propose the name of its candidate for the Rajya Sabha election in the meeting.
Earlier, the name of state NPP president, Dr WR Kharlukhi, did the round as the probable candidate.
However, former Congress leader John F Kharshiing has projected himself to be the candidate of the ruling MDA for the Rajya Sabha election.
Kharshiing wrote a letter to Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma requesting the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) to nominate him as the candidate for the Rajya Sabha election.
The term of the present Rajya Sabha member from Meghalaya, Wansuk Syiem, will end on April 12 this year.
Voting for the Rajya Sabha election is scheduled on March 26, and counting of votes will take place at 5 pm, one hour after the voting.
