This year’s edition of the Nasir Hussain Memorial Inter-district AASU Gold Cup Volleyball Tournament got underway at Kokrajhar in the Bodo heartland of Assam from Thursday.
The annual volleyball tournament is being organized by All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in memory of AASU leader Late Nasir Hussain.
As many as 23 volleyball teams from across the districts of the State are participating in this year’s tournament which will be a two-day affair.
The AASU Gold Cup Volleyball Tournament is being organized under the aegis of Kokrajhar district unit of the students’ body in association with the Balajan Tiniali unit of AASU.
The tournament is being organized at the Gauranga High School playground near Balajan Tiniali in the district.
AASU president Dipankar Nath hoisted the flag of the students’ organization on Thursday morning. In his speech, the AASU president said the State is abundant with sporting talents. He also said apart from academic activities, the students’ organization will also concentrate in promoting sports in the State.
AASU general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi offered tributes to the martyrs while AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya released a souvenir ‘Gauranga’ on the occasion.
Widow of Late Nasir Hussain, Narzi Hussain Choudhury garlanded the photograph of the late AASU leader at the inauguration function.
Various cultural items were also presented at the inaugural function showcasing the art and culture of the region.
Later former captain of the national volleyball team, Abhijit Bhattacharya formally declared open the Nasir Hussain Memorial Inter-district AASU Gold Cup Volleyball Tournament
On the occasion, the students’ body also felicitated sports organizer Simson Mushahary and former national-level football player Manik Chandra Rai, the two veteran sports personalities of the region.
