Protesting against the Manipur government’s failure to rectify the anomalies in the Revision of Pay (RoP), 2019, the teachers of the government schools launched an indefinite strike on Saturday.

Protesting under the banner of Joint Teachers’ Forum (JTF), the agitating teachers also threatened to boycott the Class X and XII examinations scheduled for later this year.

The teachers, even though were present in the schools, but they did not take any class and following the cease work strike the classes and remedial coaching for HSLC and HSSLC candidates have been cancelled.

The forum in January had served an ultimatum for the strike from February if the Manipur government failed to rectify the anomalies in the RoP by January 31.

“The Manipur government on July 11, 2019, passed the Manipur Services (Revision Pay) Rules, 2019, which downgraded the pay structure to the level of 5th Pay Commission,” said an agitating teacher.

“On the contrary, the state government is on the verge of implementing 7th Pay for its employees. This is an injustice to the teachers of the state,” the teacher added.

“Our demands fell into deaf ears and hence so we are compelled to protest against the government,” the teacher added.

JTF convener Somorendro Haobijam said, “These teachers have been demanding for RoP rectification since July 2019.”

“The state education department, acknowledging their plea, had submitted a proposal to the finance department for the right pay structure. However, the rectified order has not been issued yet,” he added.
